A cancellation is disruptive even when it is unavoidable. The fairest process is early, direct and practical: tell the other person as soon as you know, explain only what is necessary, and focus on the pet, property and travel arrangements that now need attention.
If you need to cancel
- Call or message immediately. Do not wait for a better moment.
- Confirm the dates and what has already been arranged.
- Ask whether the other person needs reasonable information to find a replacement.
- Do not promise a replacement unless you can genuinely provide one.
- Update your availability or listing as soon as the other side knows.
Before any sit, agree the backup plan
Homeowners should have a local emergency contact and a fallback care option. Sitters should not treat a tentative chat as confirmed accommodation. The earlier article what to do when a pet sitter cancels covers the urgent homeowner response.
