A sitter marked as available may still have a pending application, a changed work roster or travel that makes the dates impractical. Availability is an invitation to start a conversation, not a confirmed promise. A two-minute check before a call or meet and greet prevents the most common source of wasted time in house sitting.
The six checks that matter
- Confirm the exact arrival and departure times, not only the dates.
- Ask whether another application or offer is already pending.
- Confirm the sitter can reach the property and return home safely.
- Check the minimum and maximum sit length both people are comfortable with.
- Confirm every pet, medication and property responsibility before holding dates.
- Agree when a final yes or no will be given.
For homeowners: make the listing decision-ready
State the dates, location, pet routine, property responsibilities and whether you can be flexible. That helps unsuitable applicants opt out early and lets good applicants answer properly. If your dates are provisional, say that too.
For sitters: do not leave people guessing
Update your profile when your plans move. If a homeowner contacts you outside your preferred duration or area, a short polite decline is more useful than silence. It protects your reputation and lets the homeowner continue their search.
