When to Book a Pet Sitter for Christmas: Australia's 2026-27 Holiday Calendar

Arrange your Christmas pet care by mid-October 2026, roughly eight weeks before Queensland and South Australian schools break up on Friday 11 December 2026, the earliest summer finish of the seven states and territories confirmed below. Those two finish six days ahead of New South Wales and Western Australia and a full week ahead of Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania. The window then stays open for 54 days, until Tasmanian and western New South Wales students go back on Thursday 4 February 2027.

Every date below was read in August 2026 from the education department that publishes it. You can count backwards from a date. You cannot count backwards from "book early".

• Sitters are choosing where to spend the same 54 days, and the one reading your listing may be working to a different state's calendar from yours.

Queensland and South Australia break up a week before the southern states

The sources, jurisdiction by jurisdiction: Queensland and its future dates page, South Australia, NSW 2026 and NSW future and past dates, Western Australia, Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania.

Two details are easy to miss. New South Wales runs two calendars, and its western division stays on holiday a week longer than its eastern division, so a household in the state's far west is planning a different summer from one in Newtown. The ACT staggers its return, with new students starting on Monday 1 February 2027 and continuing students on Tuesday 2 February, so the table shows the later date.

A family in Chermside or Glenelg flying out on 12 December is looking ahead of the households whose own children are still at school. That is an advantage for the first week and a disadvantage after it, when the rest of the country arrives at once.

The Northern Territory is not in this table, and here is why

The Territory's dates could not be verified at the source. The nt.gov.au school term dates page refused automated access when this was checked, and the third-party calendar sites we looked at carried identical term dates for 2026 and 2027, which cannot both be correct. Rather than repeat a date we could not read at the source, the row is left out. Readers in Darwin, Palmerston and Alice Springs should take their dates from the Northern Territory Government's own school term dates page on nt.gov.au.

The December departure surge shows up in the national travel figures

The school calendar tells you when demand concentrates. The travel data tells you how much. Australian Bureau of Statistics figures on overseas arrivals and departures record 1,558,840 short-term resident departures in December 2025, released 12 February 2026, against 1,150,920 in June 2026, released 14 August 2026. The January 2026 release, out 17 March 2026, counts 1,665,100 short-term resident returns against 1,078,770 departures in the same month, so far more Australians came home in January than left. Those are overseas trips only, so they undercount the summer. Domestic travel over the same window does not appear in them at all.

Work backwards from 12 December, not from your own last school day

The dates below are a planning judgement built on the calendar above, not a measured statistic. No Australian source publishes how far ahead sits actually get filled, and any figure you see quoted for it has no published source behind it.

If your own state finishes on 18 December, the temptation is to add a week to every row. Do not. The sitter reading your listing may live in Toowoomba or Mount Gambier and be working to the earlier calendar. If your dates have any give in them, publish before you book flights, because moving a departure by a day to suit a sitter is easy and finding a sitter for fixed dates over Christmas Day, a Friday in 2026, is not. There is no price to raise in December, so time is the lever that matters most

Where a service carries a holiday surcharge, the extra money pulls extra supply into the peak, because the work pays more when demand is highest. Be careful with the surcharge percentages circulating online, though. No Australian government or statistical body publishes a peak-season average, and the 20% to 30% figures that come up in search results trace only to commercial cost-guide blogs. Individual facilities do publish their own. Summer changes the job, not just the dates

Christmas here is a summer event, so the brief you write has to cover heat. The RSPCA Knowledgebase on protecting a dog from heatstroke names flat-faced breeds, overweight dogs, very young and elderly animals, humid conditions with poor airflow and hot surfaces such as sand and concrete among the risks, and constant panting, pale or red gums, drooling, weakness and collapse among the signs of an emergency needing immediate veterinary attention. Write down which rooms have air conditioning, the temperature you set, where the afternoon shade falls, and the temperature at which you would skip the walk.

The Australian Veterinary Association's Vet Voice guidance on common summer hazards for pets adds paralysis ticks, snakes and spiders, warns against festive scraps including onions, fatty meat and cooked bones, and advises identifying your vet's hours and an after-hours service in advance, because availability can be limited over the holiday period. That is the detail most often left to the final week, and the one you can settle in October. Leave the clinic's public holiday hours, the nearest 24 hour emergency hospital, your pet's microchip number, and the Australian Animal Poisons Helpline on 1300 869 738, which runs 24 hours a day and charged a consultation fee from $75 when checked in August 2026. If it is already November, change the shape of the request

Being late narrows the field rather than closing it. Change what you are asking for, rather than asking harder.

1. Split the period. Two sitters across a 46 day break is far easier to fill than one unbroken block over Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.
2. Say plainly that the dates are peak. Vague listings get skipped when sitters have options.
3. Look for people already travelling. A sitter from Newtown who wants to spend January on the Sunshine Coast is looking for your dates, not avoiding them.
4. Widen the states you will consider. Interstate sitters are working to a different school calendar.
5. Decide your fallback now and ring it. The autumn 2027 break splits the same way, so the habit is worth keeping. Queensland and Victoria both finish Term 1 on Thursday 25 March 2027, while New South Wales, in both divisions, along with Western Australia, South Australia, the ACT and Tasmania, runs to Friday 9 April. A single national April holiday period does not exist.
