School holiday pet care in Australia is a state-by-state problem before it is anything else: in 2027 Queensland and Victorian schools break on Friday 26 March while New South Wales, the ACT, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia keep teaching until Friday 9 April, so work back from your own state's term dates and allow six to eight weeks for a term break and ten to twelve weeks for summer. Every date below was read in August 2026 from the education department that publishes it.

Most advice on this topic tells you to check your state's dates and stops, which withholds the one thing the question is asking for. Three things follow from the real calendar.

• The gap between the earliest and the latest jurisdiction is a fortnight after Term 1 in 2027, and about a week after Terms 2 and 3.
• A sitter reading your listing may be working to a different calendar from yours, which hurts in your own peak fortnight and helps outside it.
• On a non-monetary exchange there is no price to raise when demand spikes, so lead time is the only lever you have.

Queensland and Victoria break up to a fortnight before the rest of the country

Queensland and Victorian schools finish Term 1 2027 on Thursday 25 March and do not go back until Monday 12 April. The other five jurisdictions below teach for another two weeks, to Friday 9 April. The same lead repeats, smaller, after Term 2 and Term 3. A household in Toowoomba or Ballarat is planning against a different calendar from one in Dubbo or Hobart, and the two only fully overlap in summer.

Each range runs from the day after the last day of term to the day before students return, so it includes the weekends at both ends. The sources, jurisdiction by jurisdiction: Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, Western Australia and the ACT.

Two details are easy to miss. The ACT is always last back, a day or two after the states it shares a break with, so a Canberra family is off slightly longer each time. And New South Wales runs separate eastern and western calendars, but they differ only in when Term 1 starts, so the three breaks above apply statewide. Tasmania is worth a second look if you plan a year ahead from memory: its 2026 autumn break ran later and longer than the mainland, and its 2027 dates fall back into line with the southern states.

The Northern Territory is not in that table, and that is deliberate

The Territory's dates could not be read at the source. The nt.gov.au school term dates page refused automated access when this was checked, and the third-party calendar sites carrying Territory dates published identical terms for two consecutive years, which cannot both be correct. Rather than repeat a date we could not verify, the row is left out. Readers in Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine and Alice Springs should take their dates from the Northern Territory Government's own school term dates page on nt.gov.au.

Summer is a seven week window, not a Christmas week

The December to February break is a different planning problem from the other three, because it is roughly three times as long and its edges are staggered by weeks rather than days. Queensland and South Australian schools break up on Friday 11 December 2026, a week before Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania, and western New South Wales students do not return until Thursday 4 February 2027. Six to eight weeks covers a term break, and summer needs ten to twelve

The lead times below are a planning judgement built on the calendar and on travel volumes, not a measured statistic. No Australian source publishes how far ahead sits actually get filled, and any figure quoted for it has been invented.

Demand concentrates because travel does, not because anyone raises a price

The school calendar tells you when the pressure arrives. Australian Bureau of Statistics figures on overseas arrivals and departures tell you how hard it lands. Short-term resident returns ran 1,092,380 in April 2026, released 12 June 2026, against 917,500 in June 2026, released 14 August 2026. April, where Easter and the autumn break land together, is the clear second peak of the year. Those counts cover overseas trips only, so they undercount a school holiday considerably, and domestic travel does not appear in them at all.

On a paid service a peak surcharge pulls extra sitters into a busy fortnight, because the work pays more. On a non-monetary exchange like Sitterly, no money changes hands for the sit and there is no per-booking commission, so nothing pulls extra supply into the school holidays. A term break changes the brief you write, not only the dates

Two weeks across a public holiday is not a long weekend with more days in it. The RSPCA Knowledgebase, writing about leaving a cat while you are on holiday, sets the baseline: someone stays at the house or visits at least once or twice a day, the animal is checked daily and kept contained on the property, and council registration, microchip and contact details are current before you go. Three things a school break changes on top of that.

• Vet hours across the public holidays inside the break, plus the nearest after-hours emergency hospital.

If you have left it late, change what you are asking for, not how often you ask

Being late narrows the field rather than closing it, and the fix is to change the shape of the request.

1. Split the period. Two sitters across a fortnight is far easier to fill than one unbroken block that spans a public holiday.
2. Widen the states you will consider. Your peak fortnight is an ordinary fortnight in a state whose break falls two weeks either side of yours, and interstate applicants are often looking for exactly your postcode.
