Australia's Seven-Week Summer: Pet Care from 12 December to 3 February

Australia's 2026-27 summer school break opens on Saturday 12 December 2026 in Queensland and South Australia and closes on Wednesday 3 February 2027 in Tasmania and the western division of New South Wales. That is 54 days end to end, and for 39 of them, from Saturday 19 December to Tuesday 26 January, every state and territory in the table below is on holiday at the same time.

Pet care advice treats summer as a Christmas problem, a fortnight either side of 25 December. The calendar says otherwise. No single household gets all 54 days: the longest break belongs to the New South Wales western division at 48 days, just under seven weeks. Every date below was read in August 2026 from the education department that publishes it.

Queensland and South Australia open the window, Tasmania and western New South Wales close it

Three details do most of the damage to a plan. New South Wales runs two calendars, and its western division stays off a full week longer than its eastern division, so a household in Broken Hill or Bourke is planning a different summer from one in Marrickville. The ACT staggers its return, new students on Monday 1 February 2027 and continuing students on Tuesday 2 February, so the table shows the later date. And Victoria has the shortest break in the country at 40 days, six fewer than Queensland, which is why a Melbourne reader and a Brisbane reader can both be right and still disagree about how long the summer holidays are.

Every state and territory in the table is on holiday at once for 39 days

Split the 54 days into three segments and the whole planning problem becomes visible.

The crush is not a Christmas fortnight. It is five and a half weeks in which a Queensland family, a Perth family and a Hobart family are all away and all looking for the same thing. It ends on Australia Day 2027, with Queensland and South Australian students back the next morning, and the pressure starts to come off. Australians leave in December and come home in January, so the absence spans the turn of the year

The travel figures show the same shape from another angle. Australian Bureau of Statistics data on overseas arrivals and departures records 1,558,840 short-term resident departures in December 2025 against only 869,410 returns that month, released 12 February 2026. Returns then jump to 1,665,100 in January 2026, released 17 March 2026. People leave in December and come home in January, so the typical summer absence crosses the new year rather than sitting inside one month. Those are overseas trips only, so domestic travel over the same weeks does not appear at all.

The two shoulders are the easiest weeks in the whole window

If your dates have any give in them, the head start and the tail are worth using. A departure on 12 or 13 December sits ahead of six of the eight calendars in the table, and a return in the first days of February sits behind most of them.

For a homeowner, a listing for 12 to 20 December competes with fewer other listings than one for 27 December to 5 January. For a sitter the same fact runs the other way: the shoulders are where a homeowner has fewer applications to choose from. That is a reading of the calendar, not a measured figure. Sitterly publishes no data on how applications are spread across the year.

Seven weeks is a different job from seven days

A long summer sit is not a scaled-up weekend. The things that go wrong over 46 days rarely go wrong over four.

1. Agree who absorbs running costs, in writing, before December. Air conditioning across a Queensland January is a real number, and an easier conversation in October than in February. Our house sitting agreement guide covers what belongs in writing.
2. Consider splitting the window. Two sitters across 46 days is easier to fill than one unbroken block covering both Christmas Day and New Year's Eve, and it gives you a second person who has met your animals.
3. Nominate a local emergency contact and put it on paper. The RSPCA Knowledgebase on preparing pets for an emergency recommends at least one contact who can reach your home if you cannot, and publishes an Emergency Animal Authorisation form for that purpose. It also asks for current microchip and council registration details, a week of non-refrigerated food, and medications and vaccination records kept together.
4. Cover fire season explicitly if the property needs it. The CFA's pets and bushfires page says to "leave early before there is a fire in the area", and never to go back for a pet once a fire has started.
5. Write the handover once and leave it in the house. Over seven weeks a sitter needs the vet's holiday hours, the bin night, the pool or irrigation routine and the plan for a heatwave. The pet care handover template is built for this.

For sitters, the staggered edges are the whole opportunity

Working from one calendar is what leaves people idle. Availability written as "12 December to 3 February" reads very differently from "the Christmas break".

• Be available from 12 December if you want Queensland and South Australian sits, not from your own last day of term.
• The 27 January to 3 February tail belongs to sitters still free while most of the country is back at work.
• Interstate is not a complication here, it is the point. A sitter in Geelong and a homeowner in Toowoomba are on genuinely different calendars.

The Northern Territory is not in this table, and here is why

Territory dates could not be verified at the source. The nt.gov.au school term dates page refused automated access when this was checked in August 2026, and the third-party calendars carrying Territory dates published identical terms for 2026 and 2027, which cannot both be right. Rather than repeat a date we could not read at the source, the row is left out. Readers in Darwin, Palmerston and Alice Springs should take their dates from the Northern Territory Government's own school term dates page on nt.gov.au.
