How to Get Your First House Sit in Australia When You Have No Reviews

The fastest way to get a first Australian house sit with no reviews is to apply for the school holidays. Australian homeowners travel in a small number of tightly defined windows, the biggest of which runs from mid-December to late January, and in those weeks there are more homes needing a sitter than there are experienced sitters to fill them. That is when a homeowner will read a profile with no history and consider it anyway. Outside those windows there is usually a reviewed sitter available for every listing, and a new applicant loses on paper before anyone has spoken to them.

The problem is genuine. Homeowners want a track record, and you cannot build one without a first sit. Timing is the lever that breaks it, and it is the advice experienced Australian sitters give each other that almost never reaches a page that ranks.

The catch-22 is real, and it is not a judgement on you

New sitters describe the same experience. A dozen careful applications, no replies, no reason given. It reads as a verdict on you personally. It usually is not. A homeowner comparing applications is managing risk with very little information, and a review count is the laziest proxy available.

Reviews are also scarcer than they look. On Sitterly a review can only be left once a booking has been marked completed, so review volume on a newer platform is genuinely thin on both sides. Plenty of the people reading your application are new to this too.

School holidays are when a homeowner will take a chance on someone with no history

Australian travel is concentrated rather than spread. The Australian Bureau of Statistics recorded 1,558,840 short-term resident departures in December 2025 against only 869,410 short-term returns, and then 1,665,100 short-term returns in January 2026. That is one continuous wave rather than two separate months. The country leaves in December and comes home in January, and the homes it leaves behind still hold the same pets they held in November.

For a sitter with no reviews, the gap between that demand and the supply of proven sitters is the entire opportunity. A homeowner with a flight booked and a cat that will not settle in a cattery is weighing an unproven applicant who is available, contactable and willing to meet first against no sitter at all. The summer window opens a week earlier in Queensland and South Australia

The summer break does not start on the same day around the country. Queensland and South Australia break up on Saturday 12 December 2026, six days before New South Wales and Western Australia and a week before Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT. At the other end, New South Wales western division schools go back a full week after the eastern division. If you are willing to sit interstate, that staggering hands you close to a fortnight of extra window.

Dates are as published by each department of education: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT. New South Wales had not published a 2027 calendar when this was written, so its return dates above are the day after the published end of the summer holiday period. Northern Territory dates are not listed because the NT Government's page could not be checked, so Territory readers should confirm them with the NT Government. Departments revise dates, so check your state's link before planning around it.

Queensland and South Australian schools are out for 46 days, the longest single stretch in the Australian year. Long absences are the hardest of all to fill, because most experienced sitters would rather take three short comfortable sits than one six-week commitment.

The autumn 2027 break splits into two waves three weeks apart

April is the second travel peak. The ABS recorded 1,092,380 short-term resident returns in April 2026 against 917,500 in June. In 2027 the autumn break lands with Easter in some states and three weeks later in others, which stretches the window rather than concentrating it.

Miss the Queensland and Victorian window in late March and you still have three weeks to land a South Australian, Western Australian, Tasmanian or ACT sit. Nationally the 2027 autumn window is roughly five weeks wide, not two. New South Wales dates for 2027 were not published at the time of writing. The winter break repeats the pattern.

Apply before the window opens, not during it

Work backwards from the dates in those tables, not from the point at which you feel ready. Nobody arranges a six-week Christmas absence in the second week of December, so have your profile finished and your alerts running well before the break starts.

• Finish your profile before you send a single application. A profile that gets replies does more work than any number of applications sent from an empty one.
• Check listings in the morning. Australian sitters regularly report being beaten to a listing by applicants in other time zones who saw it overnight, a problem no overseas guide will ever mention.

Applications concentrate where sitters already want to be. A fortnight in Sydney's Inner West or Brunswick in Melbourne's inner north competes with everyone who wants a free fortnight in an inner suburb. The same fortnight in Bendigo, Toowoomba, Mandurah, Devonport or the Adelaide Hills competes with far fewer people. The same logic applies to the parts of a listing other sitters quietly avoid.

• Sits covering Christmas Day and New Year's Eve themselves, rather than the easier weeks either side.
• Long sits of a month or more, particularly across the Queensland and South Australian 46-day summer.
• Homes with three or four animals rather than one easy dog.
• Pets on daily medication, if you are genuinely comfortable with it and say so plainly.
• Properties with no public transport nearby, where having your own car decides it.
• Short sits of two or three nights, the cheapest possible way to earn a first real review.

What a homeowner reads when there are no reviews to read

Three things reliably do the job the missing reviews would have done.

References from outside house sitting. A former landlord or property manager is the strongest one most people already have, because it speaks directly to how you treat someone else's property. Employers, neighbours whose pets you have minded and animal rescue volunteering all count. An application that says plainly this would be your first sit, then explains what you have done instead, reads better than one written to imply experience it cannot evidence. Homeowners are good at spotting the difference, and the ones who are not are not the homeowners you want.
