Usually it means a sitter sleeps at your home and provides the pet care you agree. It does not automatically mean someone is present throughout the day or continuously supervising your animal. Before confirming, agree the hours, tasks, daytime absences and coverage at the beginning and end of your trip.
The word "overnight" can hide the detail an owner most needs. Someone arriving after dinner and leaving early is offering a different arrangement from someone living at your address for the whole holiday. Either may be useful, but only if it meets your pet's needs.
Turn the label into a daily schedule
Ask the sitter to describe a normal day during your booking. Find out when they work, study, visit other clients or go out. Then compare that plan with the feeding, exercise, toilet breaks, medication and company your pets need.
For example, a dog normally walked at lunchtime still needs that walk arranged if the overnight sitter works away all day. You might agree different care with the sitter or choose another provider. Do not assume that paying for nights covers the missing daytime task.
There is no universal set of inclusions across every provider. Pawshake publishes its own service guidelines and says owners and sitters are welcome to agree alternative arrangements. Those are that platform's guidelines, not a standard that applies to other services or to an exchange.
Be specific about what the pets need
Write a short list that a person can actually agree to: feeding times, walks, litter cleaning, any agreed medication tasks and the company your animals need. Include every animal, not just the dog in your enquiry.
If your pet has a health or behaviour concern, get suitable advice about the care it needs and share it before booking. Discuss a request for "someone always there" explicitly. If continuous supervision is genuinely needed, ask who can provide it, how breaks will work and what it will cost, rather than inferring it from "live-in" or "works from home".
Check the first and final day
Give your actual departure and return times. Ask when the sitter will arrive and leave, and identify any gap. A handover the evening before a dawn flight may be more practical than expecting someone to arrive as you leave, but it must be agreed.
Return travel deserves the same attention. Tell the sitter when you expect to be home, not just the date your flight lands. Agree whom to contact if you are delayed and who can take over if the sitter cannot extend. Do not assume an extra night is available because you have already booked several.
Decide which household tasks are included
Collecting mail or watering a few pots may be easy to agree, while major gardening, extensive cleaning or managing tradespeople is a different commitment. Keep pet care central and describe household tasks accurately. Discuss visitors, keys, room access and any privacy issues before somebody moves in.
Use a written record of the arrangement, along with care instructions and emergency contacts, so two reasonable people do not remember different promises after you have left. Our questions to ask before confirming a sitter can help structure that conversation.
Is an overnight exchange different from paid care?
The payment model differs, but clarity about presence still matters. In an accommodation exchange you are agreeing care with a person who will stay in your home, not buying an unlimited service package. Explain the workload and make sure their routine fits it. State your presence requirements up front
If you can host someone and an exchange suits your needs, list your home with the dates and presence requirements clearly stated. Ask prospective sitters to respond to those details, so you can choose based on the care that will actually happen.
