Why Australian Sitters Miss the Best Listings, and What to Do About It

    7 min readBy Sitterly TeamPublished

An Australian house sitting listing published in the evening is the one that disappears while you sleep, because 8pm in Sydney is 9am in London. The same listing published mid afternoon is the least contested of the day, because 3pm in Sydney is 4am in London and 11pm the previous evening in New York. Being asleep is not what costs Australian sitters listings. Only ever looking at night is.

Australian sitters raise this often enough that some of them question whether joining a platform is worth it at all, on the grounds that people in other time zones will always get there first. The arithmetic behind the complaint is real. The conclusion usually drawn from it is not.

Australia runs three time zones and the gap to Britain is the one that hurts

Australian standard time is set by state law, not federal law. The NSW Department of Communities and Justice sets out the three zones: Australian Eastern Standard Time at UTC plus 10 hours, Australian Central Standard Time at UTC plus 9.5, and Western Standard Time at UTC plus 8. New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, the ACT and South Australia then add an hour of daylight saving, which runs from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April. In New South Wales that means 2am on Sunday 4 October 2026 through to 3am on Sunday 4 April 2027. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not change their clocks at all.

That means the distance between your bedroom and a British applicant's laptop moves twice a year, and it is widest in exactly the weeks Australians travel most.

One Sydney day in January, read on three clocks
Sydney timeLondonNew YorkWhat that hour means
8am Wednesday9pm Tuesday4pm TuesdayNorth America is still at work
3pm Wednesday4am Wednesday11pm TuesdayThe quietest hour on both northern clocks
6pm Wednesday7am Wednesday2am WednesdayBritain is starting its day
9pm Wednesday10am Wednesday5am WednesdayThe British working day is under way

A listing that goes live at 9pm on a Tuesday in Sydney reaches Britain at the start of a working morning, and by the time an Australian opens it at 7am an entire British working day has happened inside those ten hours. That part of the complaint is genuine. Outside daylight saving the gaps narrow by an hour or two, so the pattern shifts rather than disappears, and since nobody publishes figures on when Australian homeowners actually press publish, treat all of this as clock arithmetic rather than measurement.

    The three checks that matter

Check first thing in the morning for anything published overnight, again in the middle of the afternoon when the northern clocks are quietest, and once before bed. Staying up to refresh a feed at 1am is the least useful thing you can do with the hour.

For a Perth or Darwin sitter the harder gap is a domestic one

Most Australian homes you will see listed are on eastern time. About 22.5 million of Australia's 27.8 million people lived in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania or the ACT at 31 December 2025, on Australian Bureau of Statistics figures published on 18 June 2026.

From October to April, Perth is three hours behind Sydney and two and a half behind Adelaide, so a Perth sitter's 6am alarm goes off at 9am in Sydney, roughly when an eastern homeowner sits down with a coffee and their inbox. Darwin and Adelaide carry half hour offsets that make the same point in smaller increments.

The reverse is worth using. If you live in Melbourne or Brisbane, a sit in Fremantle, Mandurah or Bunbury puts you two or three hours ahead of every local applicant, and an application waiting in a Perth homeowner's inbox at breakfast is the one they read first.

The homeowner is not picking the first applicant

Applying is a message, not a queue ticket. A homeowner with a flight booked works in two passes: a quick removal of anyone who does not match what the listing asked for, then a proper read of whoever survived. Arriving first with a message that ignores the medication schedule loses to one that arrives nine hours later and answers it, and our guide to why house sitters do not get picked sets out what the first pass removes.

There is also a second door, and it works while you are asleep. Homeowners can browse the sitter directory themselves, filter it by location, age group, availability status, pet experience and police check, and send a booking request to someone who never applied to anything. A finished profile showing as Available is doing work at 3am that no amount of refreshing will do. An unfinished one is not so much rejected as never returned in the results.

Your other local advantage is the one homeowners are told to look for. Consumer Protection WA's guidance on house, pet and baby sitting services, last updated 21 November 2024, tells Australians to seek references they can contact personally, check that national police certificates are held, and read their own home insurance for exclusions. Those favour an applicant who can be met in person this week, which is not something an early reply from the other side of the world can buy.

A listing still open after a week deserves your best message

Sitterly shows the listings page newest first, and the cards carry the sit dates rather than a posted date, so position is your age signal. Anything above where you stopped reading yesterday is new. Anything you recognise from last week has been passed over by everyone who saw it first.

What to do with a listing based on how long it has been up
How long it has been listedWhat that usually meansWhat to send
A few hours, top of the pageEvery sitter watching has seen it at onceApply only where you match it exactly, answering the hardest requirement in your first two lines
One or two daysThe homeowner has a first batch and is comparing themThe thing the listing emphasises, plus a time you can meet or take a video call
A week or more, dates still openThe early applicants did not fit, or the homeowner is still decidingYour best message of the week, and ask plainly whether the dates are still open
Dates start within a fortnightThe homeowner is running out of runwaySame week availability, your suburb, and an offer to meet the pets before they fly

Listings do stay visible after a homeowner has stopped reading them, so a quiet older one is sometimes a filled one. Asking whether the dates are still open costs nothing and gives the message a reason to exist.

    What to change this week

    1. Move your checking to the morning and the middle of the afternoon, and stop refreshing at midnight.
    2. Finish the profile, keep your availability status current and complete whichever verification tiers you are willing to, because homeowners filter the directory on all three.
    3. Save the listings you are serious about rather than trying to hold them in your head.
    4. Reply to a homeowner's first question the same day. Your reply rating is built from how quickly you respond, and it is one of the few signals a sitter with no completed bookings can build immediately.
    5. Apply to the sits other people scroll past, which is the argument in our guide to getting a first sit with no reviews.

What Sitterly does and does not do

Sitterly supports the connection. Homeowners and sitters remain responsible for their own arrangements. Verification is optional and started by the member rather than applied to everyone, and completing a tier is not an endorsement of that person by the platform.

Questions Australian sitters ask about timing

Do overseas sitters really get Australian listings first?
Sometimes, and mainly for listings published in the Australian evening, which land in the middle of a British working day. There is no hour when everybody overseas is asleep, but mid afternoon here is the closest thing to one.
Can I set up an alert so I do not have to keep checking?
Sitterly's email settings cover new messages, booking updates and marketing, so there is no new listing alert to switch on. On this site the morning check and a complete, findable profile are the two mechanisms, and the profile is the one that works overnight.
Should I set an alarm for the middle of the night to catch new listings?
No. A tired generic message at 2am loses to a specific one at 8am, and the listings worth your best writing are usually the ones that have been up for several days.
Do sitters coming from overseas need a visa that allows house sitting?
Whether a visitor or working holiday visa permits house sitting is outside what this article covers. Anyone travelling to Australia should check their own conditions with the Department of Home Affairs.

    Your next check

Queensland state schools finish Term 4 on Friday 11 December 2026 and the 46 day summer break starts the next day, with the rest of the country following within a week, so homeowners planning around that window are looking for sitters well before it opens. Open the sits that are live now in the morning rather than at midnight, and pick out the ones that have been sitting there a while. If you have not joined yet, create a sitter profile and finish it, so a homeowner can find you at three in the morning without you doing anything at all.
